I began working in the counseling and mental health field in 1988. I have practiced in a variety of settings, including a psychiatric hospital, youth leadership positions, community mental health, and private practice. For several years I focused on children and families, receiving a Child Mental Health Specialist (CMHS) designation from the state of Washington. I have been invited to guest lecture at universities, spoken as an expert consultant on- and off-air for TV, news, and talk media, and am published in my field. I currently am with Vancouver Counseling Group, LLC.
I completed my undergraduate studies George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon, and I earned my Masters degree at Lewis and Clark College in 1993. I am a musician and a Christian. I am a Portland, Oregon native and my wife is a Vancouver, Washington native. We have have been married since 1989 and have two adult children and a dog.
I use an eclectic array of counseling tools, and often include principles from cognitive behavioral therapy, systems theory, and behaviorism. I have experience with a wide variety of theoretical and therapeutic approaches, all focused on instilling hope, empowering the individual, and creating opportunity for discovery and positive transformation. I attempt to engage and challenge people in areas of their lives that relate to their desired goals. I regularly incorporate humor as part of the healing process and often give specific homework as part of the treatment plan. I welcome people of all backgrounds, no matter what stage of life they find themselves in.
As a counselor, I am regularly inspired by my clients’ progress and consider it a privilege to work alongside them as a small part of their life journey. I truly look forward each day to the opportunity to serve others.
